• A Home in the Adirondacks

    Style

Several months ago I recommended one of the best books on style I've ever come across, I Love Your Style: How to Define and Refine Your Fashion Style. Written by Amanda Brooks, currently the women's fashion director at Barney's, I found the book incredibly applicable to men as well. Brooks apparently gets her fashion sense from her mom, Elizabeth Stewart, who designed their home in the forests of the Adirondack Mountains some 30 odd years ago. The winter wonderland appears to be the perfect respite from the NYC grind.

Brooks invited Vogue into her family's Adirondack cabin home last December. Amidst the rustic opulence is a handmade wooden canoe acquired from the Vanderbilts, quirky collections (very preppy) of carved bears, and personal touches like a signing post scarred with generations of initials. And it's roomy too. The house sleeps the entire extended brood during the summer, fall, and winter months. Not a bad place to ring in the new year.

"I have been coming up here since I was five years old. This is a place where we can really get away and connect with nature. It's a big part of who we are."

Stunning interiors, aside from a chalet in the Swiss Alps, it’d be a dream winter home. I’ve always wanted to visit the Adirondacks – especially Camp Topridge for its amazing boathouse.

Dear lord, between the plaid on her and the cabin’s interior - I love it all.

I absolutely adore that book.  I read, and reread until I had it mostly memorized, that book made me realize what I love in clothes, which is classic… and made me purge everything unworthy from my closet and never look back!  That home goes very well with my impression of Brooks, awesome!!

Beautiful. Really makes me want to settle in and have a drink in front of the fire. Amanda Brooks is sexy as hell too.

This house is gorgeous, it reminds me of my family’s own log cabin in the Adirondacks although is much more prep and the wall of windows really set it on a different level.

Love it all!!!! Last winter my boyfriend and I spent a long weekend at Lake Placid Lodge, housed in the former Rockefeller Family fishing lodge. It was one of the most glorious weekends ever!  Snowshoeing…hiking…gourmet meals…lux accommodation. If you are in the market for a quintessential Adirondack getaway, I highly recommend!

There is no question that this is all very tastefully done, but for me personally, I just find the preppy “interior design” aesthetic too cluttered.  I much prefer the futuristic/minimalist style—- clean hardwood floors, empty walls, and minimal furniture.  Of course, my parents (preppies themselves) constantly lament that I don’t own anything except clothes, which, I suppose, is true.

Beautiful. I love the Adirondack style. We used to go up to the mountains when I was a kid. The Adirondacks, and also the Finger Lakes region.

She looks very familiar. From Greenwich, perhaps? And didn’t she write a column for Men’s Vogue a few years ago?
