    Style

Caulfield Preparatory is a new contemporary menswear brand playing up unique off-beat details such as signature half sleeve silhouettes on their button down shirts and henleys. The Spring 2010 collection hits stores starting at the end of the month featuring swim shorts, lightweight knits, scarves, beanies and other nautical-inspired casual wear. Though usually not one for graphic tees, I love their white whale tee reminiscent of freshman biology 101 (and if you haven't noticed, thick plastic frames have surfaced amidst this ivy league fashion resurgence). The airy color palette in their look book has me all aboard for summer. Caulfield Preparatory is available nationwide at Bloomingdales, revolveclothing.com, Ron Herman, American Rag and Holt Renfrew to name a few. Spring ahoy!

as a holden caulfield fan, naturally, when i got wind of this brand and concept i was a bit offended, as it seems some of you were too. which led to intrigue, i researched the brand and found an interview with the designer, in which i read that the character he’s dressing isn’t in fact holden(which was my intitial thought), its his own. which to my surprise was refreshing.  and im not going to lie, as far as clothing and photography, i loved what i saw.

    so…

i bought the caulfield preparatory gold corduroy suit (blazer, vest, and trouser), ive worn it three times all together, and countless times separately,  so let me say that ive probably received more compliments on that suit than i have collectively on my whole closet.  so concept aside, i believe that the clothes speak for themselves.

and Jay- personally, and maybe im wrong in saying this, but i dont see helmut lang here at all, and to say that caulfield preparatory is ripping off ralph lauren is like saying mcdonalds is ripping off carls jr. i mean they’re both american menswear companies right? and if thats the case, then apc. is burger king.  they all have cheesburgers and fries, the basics, the essentials. but, you like one more than the others, don’t you?

and maybe you’re right, about frank winning the award. but personally if i had to choose one brand for my closet, hands down i would pick caulfield preparatory over jcrew, need i say why? but thats just me.

fred, can’t really get too bummed about it. I think you should be honest about the reasons for posting the brand. It looks good, but I think it lacks the soul of the rest of the stuff on your website. It’s like a brand new pair of converse vs. an pair of old beat up ones. the new ones are shiny and look nice and new, but the old ones have history, are interesting and are more than just a pair of shoes, they’re a record of life lived.

although it got nominated for best new designer (or I should say the man behind the brand), I think the brand is weaker than it’s designer. You have to admit this exactly what Salinger was against. This is the primary knee jerk reason for the rejection of the brand, it’s premises are flawed.

Oh and I’m sure Frank at J.crew will probably win the award anyway.

I guess I needed to put one of those new sarcastic exclamations after my last post.

    Tucker—I highly doubt it.

I guess this is what finally put J.D. six feet under.

anybody know where i could get that peacoat. The rest of the stuff is nice, but that peacoat would be a very important part of my weekend attire for football games during october and january.

And make sure to catch my new clothing line “Preppy McPreperson”, a revisioning of “vintage Americana” baing sold at “pop up fleas” and high end departmant stores everywhere.

Looks like the line has some nice pieces, but the name turns me off. Seems like they just want to cash in on the “preppy” trend going on right now.

Nice stuff. Not anything I would call remotely preppie as far as I can see, but it has the spirit and I there are some nice pieces. The peacoat and the scarf look good.

Ehhhh… I hope I’m being too much of a debbie downer here but another american menswear brand? Prep in the name? Another blatant catcher in the rye reference? More black acetate frames? Boats? I see blatant design rip offs of stuff sold thru barney’s and fred segal, helmut lang, ralph lauren, a.p.c.. I mean I guess we all can’t be unique but with a name like caulfield prep, you’re asking for it.

This brand gets a triumphant thumbs down, although I understand why you chose it for the site. It’s just too heavy handed, clumsy and making a mockery and not so clever caricature of the entire ivy/prep style.
