You guys nailed it, guy’s got money and no style.

@Jason: I totally agree with you.
By the way, I like his outfit. Not everyone feels comfortable in skinnier pants. There is only one thing I don’t like this much, namely the combination of red pants and a purple tie.

Also, I did not mean to imply that this guy is an a**hole; for all I know he’s a super-nice dude. I just meant that the celebration of a ‘look’ that’s really going on right now in the blogosphere (esp. re: the reissue of Take Ivy, which has been getting a lot of ballyhoo), seems to be grounded in a kind of valorization of a very distinct bygone era in which certain kinds of capital (social, gender, class, racial, etc.) were reproduced within a certain segment of the population that, were it still going on today at the same levels, I would hope we would all be appalled by. That being said, torn from its troubling historical context, I think the GTH look is pretty sweet.

I like this guy’s outfit…even if the jacket may be a tad ill-fitting. I do wonder a little, however, about the prep/trad/ivy blogosphere’s uncritical celebration of the “none-of-your-damn-business,” ‘go to hell,’ ‘(insert adjective) insouciance,’ facial expressions that some of these men/boys wear. To me, they just look like a**holes who have had their pics posted on the internet and are being praised for what, if they had on a different outfit, might just elicit comments less of adulation, than of criticism. No one should have being/looking like an a**hole be a celebrated part of their cultural aesthetic. That said, I think this is a great blog, and I thoroughly enjoy reading it!

What’s with all the haters?  Guy looks good.  And PS red pants look better than Nantucket Reds.  FACT.

Ok, there needs to be a primer on the difference between studied, carless style, and not-caring dumpiness. In one, you look good, but effortless, in the other, you just look like schlub. If you’re good, you can pull off the former without having to lay out your wardrobe ahead of time but it still takes consideration and thought. It shows a respect for yourself and others, and a inner joy at being an individual. This guy just looks like a miserable, privileged slob. He reminds me of the cousins at my family reunions that spend the whole time drinking too much expensive liqour and moaning about how unfulfilled and miserable they feel. Yeah, maybe he doesn’t give a damn what I think of his look, but you can go to your average Wal-Mart, Target or Supermarket and see a lot of people who give even less of a damn, so why aren’t they being posted up here so we can admire their “ensemble”?

This guy to me looks like he grew up dressing like this rather then discovering it later in life like most of us here. So he may not have the same sensbility that we do regarding fit and length being a child of the 80’s. Also his wardrobe may have consisted of hand-me-downs as a child so he may be used to ill fitting cloths. Whatever the case to me he looks comfortable as is; and all the perfect elements of classic preppy style and nonchalance are there. And though it might be ill fitting i’m sure he really doesnt give a damn what you think and just gets dressed in the mornign rather then contemplating his outfits each day.

Guy looks like he’s got money but no style… kind of like knowing what books to talk about but never actually reading them. Nailed the elements of the uniform but not the spirit of it. Might be true of other parts of his life also.

I think the untailored fit adds an appropriate degree of nonchalance here.  If I saw this guy at a wedding, I bet he’d be the best dressed there, with the possible exception of the bride.

You can debate the break of the pants all you want (I’m a no break 2” cuff guy) but some guys just like some break and some guys don’t like cuffs.  So I’ll let him slide on that.  Jacket does need at least sleeve shortening, but the biggest offense is the tie.  Gives away the fact that he made an effort but doesn’t know what he’s doing because the tie is just all kinds of wrong.

    Classic look. Poor execution.

I’m a tad disappointed, FEC. This is a poor attempt and no man should aspire to this look. I can’t blame a man for trying, but I’m not sure this gentleman tried at all. It just looks sloppy/lazy. Tighten it up.

Syndey left a comment on 7/26/2010 at 4:03 PM:

I’m sorry to agree with several of the commentators: the jacket and trousers are poorly tailored. (Looks almost as if he just wore them straight off the peg!) Also, at the risk of being pedantic, the loafers are snaffle bit (there are many kinds of “horse bits”).

Is this the guy who had to ferry the lobster slippers from Ohio, or maybe the groomsman whose slippers didn’t turn up, that’s why he’s had to trot out the Guccis? Great colours, but trousers way too long and no cuffs.

Perfect scenery, was this taken at the filming of Wedding Crashers?  haha.  Wish I had more to say about how great the outfit is.  Go to the tailor.  Jacket needs a lot of work, as do the pants.  The sockless look doesn’t work well when you have baggy pants on.  From what I can see, the tie looks a bit out of place, as well.  Right ideas, poor execution.

Check out my new blog, please.

Seriously, the blazer is too large and the pants too long. My 2ct. - But classic outfit anyways! Thanks

@Dave—I am not sure if you need to adjust your monitor’s color, but those look like “Reds” from here. Couldn’t agree more on the sleeve length of the blazer—but even if I told him I’m not sure he would care (I’d like to see his pants shorter too…but then again, I’d like to see everyone’s that way). After all, that sleeve being too long could be what this prep non-chalance is all about for him. Could be his dad’s blazer?

Dave left a comment on 7/26/2010 at 8:52 AM:

Good job, sir.  Nice shoes.  But a few points; those aren’t Reds, the jacket is too long (let’s see some cuff), and cheer up you’re at a wedding not a funeral!

Great outfit!  I need to find a couple occasions to pull out my Nantucket reds before the summer’s over.

Great look. The expression on his face says “The ferry back to the Mainland is NEVER on time!” -I wore my Guccis yesterday, but with socks (it WAS church, afterall).

Nice. This is a classic look. And horsebit loafers, despite what some provincials say, are de rigueur. What else can one say?
