So let this be the end all be all for what I specifically meant by this quote.

A man can know all the rules of dressing well…yet lack personality (style).  Personality can often be found in breaking the rules in moderation. Being well dressed can be accomplished by imitation and money. Style requires you knowing yourself and having the confidence to express that in your dress.

I think FEC’s quote makes perfect sense. (You can be well-dressed in thrift shop clothes, it’s just a matter of; have you bought into what’s “in” and current, or are you forming your personable “look”?(

    Very unclearly expressed.
What the writer probably meant was: “Dressing fashionably and dressing with style are not one and the same”.

Maybe it’s “well dressed” that confuses me.  Obviously people can look horrible in Polo or Armani and people can look great in thrift shop, so is well
dressed an economic description?  Is style being well dressed?

Dr. Cornel West seems to summarize FEC’s views quite elegantly.

This is actually quite a keen observation. You CAN have style without being well-dressed, but chances are that your style would not be something that anyone with taste would want to emulate. Now, if you can hit the “sweet spot” where you have style AND are well-dressed, then bravo.

@C.f.—Yes, I did. Is there an unwritten law I can’t quote myself?  It’s more like a note.

    Did you just quote yourself?

How I see it is, two guys are both wearing the same Black suit, lace ups, white shirt and Tie. But one could have basically that, just the clothing, it fits, but its just put on. But the other could have taken the time to have the suit tailored, and may have vintage cuff links, or a tie bar, pocket squire, maybe some unique socks all that can add a subtle personal style. Both well dress, but one has style. That’s my take on it.

Anyone can put a polo shirt on, but they can still be a sartorial mess.

    This requires explanation.
