• P.J. Clarke’s

Culture | Food & Drink | Prep Essentials

I’m running a bit late to the corner of 55th & 3rd. Max Wastler and I have a lunch date. After a handful of text exchanges, I spot him in the red brick saloon—penny-tile floors, carved mahogany bar, tin ceiling and stained-glass transoms. P.J. Clarke’s is a vestige of a better time—another century all together. It also serves a legendary burger. It’s wall-to-wall packed with suits (and deals were certainly being made) but we manage two stools at Doug Quinn’s bar with a bit of timing and keen eyes.

It’s a UES landmark nestled on a corner of what the locals have deemed “Hamburger Row.” Once owned by Patrick J. Clarke, an Irish emigrant, he was hired in the early 1900s by a Mr. Duneen who ran the saloon. After about ten years working for him, the eponymous owner bought the bar and changed the name. The building has squatted this corner since 1884, a holdout on the block despite the taunting 47-story skyscraper ominously waiting to swallow it up. P.J. Clarke’s has counted Frank Sinatra (an extremely generous tipper) and Jacqueline Onassis as patrons—Jackie’s choice fare being a spinach salad and a quick hamburger. The preppy patronage stretches back further than the legacies at Dartmouth.

Clarke’s burgers are served atop a thin sliced raw onion (supposedly to keep the bottom bun from soaking) and a hefty pickle spear. Quinn, arguably one of the best bartenders in the city, slides the storied burgers up next to our beers. He is always in a bow tie. It’s his thing for reasons serving function as much as form. And the burger, well, it tastes like a era when Americans made things better.

This would be my first stop on a NYC visit. My father used to lunch here sometimes during his youth. P.J.‘s is mentioned quite often as an post-work meeting place on MAD MEN.

The pic is awesome too…was it taken with a filter of some sort (Instagram, etc.)? Kind of a vintage-y photo effect!

Largely overlooked in comments thus far is Doug Quinn, referenced by FEC.  To me Doug epitomizes what it means to be a bartender.  By all means go for an excellent burger, but skip the table and sit at the bar.  You won’t regret it

A preppy friend pointed me here today, and I just had to comment to say that one of my friends loves to tell the story of how his uncle was the original maitre d’ at P.J. Clarke’s and how his job mostly consisted of making sure celebrities who were in the midst of feuds didn’t get seated near each other.  Sounds like my kinda job.

Another NY institution is headed towards DC - following Carmine’s opening of the largest restaurant in Washington with it’s China Town outpost, PJC’s will be taking over the old Olives on 16th street only mere yards from the Oval Office.

tartan and tweed is like PB&J, they just go together.  interesting choice of the striped flats too, which offsets the plaid up top, and the formality of the pearls, at once.  brava, young lady.

Now about that dude in the fair isle, repp tie, and monk straps? As a whole it works despite nothing “matching”, but I think that’s the point.

  • Big Pony Fragrances

    Style

There is something about Bruce Weber’s photography that is distinctly youthful, inherently American. Ralph Lauren recently tapped Weber’s vision (once again) to introduce The Big Pony Collection of fragrances inspired by the four players of a polo team, the icon of the American lifestyle brand for the past four decades. Not only did Weber shoot the print campaign but he directed a short companion video. It is quintessential lifestyle photography. The styling exhibits depth, the mood light, and the landscape detailed. The fragrances are based on a duo of ingredients to give a clear and precise signal from the top to the background.

1: The Sporty Fragrance—This refreshing tonic matches up lime and grapefruit.
2: The Seductive Fragrance—Of the four Big Pony scents, 2 is the most provocative, a mix of dark chocolate, ginger and spice. Most of the women I have spoken to love this one. Unlike anything out there.
3: The Adventurous Fragrance—A thrilling scent of mint and ginger root that triggers somewhat of an adrenaline rush. Its nod to the outdoors makes this my personal favorite.
4: The Stylish Fragrance—An energizing boost that layers mandarin and kyarawood for a one-of-a-kind, stylish edge.

    Images via Bruce Weber

I’ve been enjoying all four over the past two weeks and I want to give one of you the scent of your choice. To throw your name in the hat, leave a comment below with the Big Pony scent you prefer. A winner will be chosen at random, giveaway ends Thursday September 30, 2010 end of day.

F.E. Castleberry left a comment on 9/27/2010 at 1:27 PM:

@Richard Ross—This Weber shoot definitely has a Palm Beach feel to it. In Palm Beach, almost anything goes.  White pants in Fall? Yes. Go-to-hell pants? All year round. Lilly Pulitzer-esque prints? Absolutely.  The overall styling hits a season-less note, and more or less combines all the different seasons together. For example, white bucks next to black Prince Albert slippers…polos next to wool houndstooth blazers.  It’s a fun contradiction. Just keep in mind the weather, season, and the region for which you are dressing…and then have fun with it.

    Pink pants for the fall?

I have a pair of bright pink heavy weight (velvet, I believe) pants that I save for a few weeks in the spring, but I really like the idea of pink for the fall. Are there rules for when pink is just not okay?
