• The Vitals Preppy Guidebook

Music & Books | Prep Essentials

Prior to Lisa Birnbach’s much anticipated sequel to The Official Preppy Handbook, the now defunct Vitals Man magazine published a guidebook in the spring of 2005 that foresaw American pop culture’s revisitation to their on-again-off-again infatuation with preppy style (many of us would argue our relationship status never changed). This abridged enchiridion by Rosecrans Baldwin embodies the same spirit and execution as its predecessor. That the guidebook is still relevant half a decade later comes as no surprise; however, much like the magazine featuring the claw-shaped brass buckle, the website selling them has vanished.

A great list! Especially the “Deal bag”, NRA, and knowing your way around Northeast Harbor.  The Barbour Border coat is longer and I think better looking.

    Dear Mr. Castlebury,

I think someone is copying your blog. (i.e: Wasp101)

Not so sure about the NRA—guns yes, but that organization is so…well, NQOKD. Ducks Unlimited!

You can buy the mount gay caps in Barbados. My dad wears one while he does gardening and he has zero style

You can get the lobster claw buckle from craftmastersofnantucket on their Ebay store. It makes the outfit!

Young Man - Love this post, particularly the study.  Books, fire, liquor, leather ... I might add a nice pair of dice cups to go with the backgammon. Games of chance, good conversation with good friends, the stuff of memories ...

The Falls had a brief but memorable run.  You can now find the same crowd at Southside.  Love the study - I need a better backgammon set and some pheasant taxidermy.

Wow, Vitals was ahead of it’s time on the resurgence of the preppy trend.

How appropriate that the Mount Gay regatta hat is included!  Nearly everyone I sail with with proudly sports these (faded, of course) on the water.

What a treat!  This seems to have exactly what True Prep is lacking, a sense of whimsy.  Well, that and color photography.  Sadly, I only made it through ten or 15 pages and haven’t had the urge to pick it back up.

I have missed the morning editions, and was wondering when they would return. Thank you for posting early!

I have saved this issue of Vitals in my closet for exactly this reason. Vitals was a unique men’s magazine and is still missed.
