Photographed in New York by Tommy Ton for GQ
It's always a nice surprise when Tommy Ton snaps you during New York Fashion Week (especially since I only go to a handful of shows). I am in awe of some of the images he manages to create on the fly—definitely one of the best out there photographing street style.
Noteworthy: lizard tassel loafers, Gary Clark Jr.'s Bright Lights on my iPod.

Very Michael J Fox from Back to the Future with that red puffer vest!

@Andrew—Fair question. It is OK if you feel OK. That’s the key to wearing anything practically. Duckie Brown sent models down runway in knee length sweaters with varsity jackets over them…essentially creating a kilt/goth silhouette. What I’m doing here could be hinting at that. The difference in length is substantial enough to vocalize, “This is intentional, and not a mishap.”
@Jay—I do own some pairs of socks but I am also terribly inept at pairing them together with my clothes. Honestly, most of the time, I can’t be bothered with socks. I’ve been on the hunt for yellow cotton crew socks for the longest time. I’d probably wear them with everything when it was below 40 degrees if I could find a decent supply of them.

Hey Fred,
Awesome look! I have a question about the blazer under the vest; is it generally okay for the blazer to be longer than the down vest it’s worn under? I’ve avoided wearing a down vest over my blazers because I thought this was kind of awkward. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

You clearly own fashionable socks. You’ve worn them in the past. Why none here?

Great look, Fred…You sure have mastered layering. Also, it is without a doubt that Gary Clark Jr.‘s music is noteworthy.

No socks in February? And in NY no less? One day I’ll possess your confidence.

Noteworthy: with the collar up, this leather bomber is one of the smartest jackets I own.

Terrific jacket. Good to see support for the leather. I agree with Mike. A sleek and elegant leather jacket is great if you can pull it off.

Anyone saying a bomber jacket doesn’t go with prep or trad just needs to google JFK and his bomber, which was passed on to Bobby after his death. Both look great in it.

@Alexander—Te bomber is J.Crew.

Love the top half of this look. Nice job. Where’s the bomber from?

Great look. I need to get myself a bomber jacket. I would add, though, that the jacket does not *need* to be leather—a cotton bomber jacket also looks great, and would probably be a lot cheaper, too. But a very solid look from the unabashed prep.

@Chens—You’re probably right. I don’t get the ugly sneaker trend either—stay away from them ;)

Genre dressers won’t like it, nor will the trad nerds who can’t pull off a leather jacket, but it looks cool and you look like you.
I don’t get the ugly sneaker trend, though.
